Breaking Free from Frozen Shoulder: A Patient’s Journey and a Provider’s Perspective on the neoGEN® System

Frozen shoulder, or adhesive capsulitis, is a condition that causes significant pain, stiffness, and loss of mobility in the shoulder joint. For many individuals, simple tasks such as reaching for an object, getting dressed, or even sleeping become increasingly difficult as the condition progresses.

Traditional treatments range from physical therapy to steroid injections, and in severe cases, surgery. However, alternative non-invasive therapies like the neoGEN® System are emerging as promising solutions for managing pain and improving mobility.

This blog explores frozen shoulder, a patient’s journey using the neoGEN® System, and a provider’s perspective on how this technology is transforming recovery.

Understanding Frozen Shoulder: What Is It and Why Does It Happen?

Frozen shoulder progresses in three stages:

  1. Freezing Stage (2-9 months) – Pain intensifies and range of motion gradually decreases.
  2. Frozen Stage (4-12 months) – Pain may lessen, but the shoulder remains stiff and difficult to move.
  3. Thawing Stage (5-24 months) – Range of motion slowly improves, and normal function may return over time.

Causes and Risk Factors

While the exact cause remains unclear, frozen shoulder is often triggered by shoulder immobility, which can result from:

  • Injury or trauma (e.g., fractures, rotator cuff injuries)
  • Post-surgical immobility
  • Medical conditions (e.g., diabetes, thyroid disorders, cardiovascular disease)
  • Prolonged lack of movement due to pain or external factors

A Patient’s Journey: Overcoming Frozen Shoulder with the neoGEN® System

For D.H., a 58-year-old patient, her frozen shoulder likely developed due to a fractured humerus sustained while catching an infant, which led to prolonged immobility and subsequent stiffness.

“In Feb of 2024 I suffered an injury to my right arm. As the initial injury began to heal I noticed my arm begin to get stiffer and stiffer and harder and harder to move. After about 10 weeks instead of the pain decreasing, it steadily became worse.

I decided to make an appointment to see my GP. Went to my Dr., and was referred out to an Orthopedist for more testing and an MRI.

Once the MRI results came in, I met with the specialist and was diagnosed with frozen shoulder. I was told the treatment can take anywhere from 6 months – 2 years. I was prescribed physical therapy and asked to come back in 3 months for further evaluation.”  – D.H.

D.H. sought relief through the neoGEN® System, a bioelectric therapy designed to increase circulation, reduce pain, and support neuromuscular reeducation.

Tracking Her Progress: The Tests

Throughout her treatment, D.H. underwent three primary range-of-motion tests:

  • True Arm Test – Lifting the arm outward and upward.
  • I Surrender Test – Raising the arms at a 90-degree angle and pressing the wrists against a wall.
  • Hand Behind the Back Test – Reaching the hand behind the lower back.

Her Treatment Journey

Over 12 treatment sessions, D.H. received progressively adjusted neoGEN® programs at varying intensities a couple times per week. Testing was conducted and photo documented prior to each session. The sessions were designed to increase mobility and reduce pain, gradually reintroducing movement.

The Results

By the end of her treatments, D.H. reported significant pain relief and improved mobility, successfully performing movements that were previously impossible. She regained much of her shoulder function, allowing her to resume daily activities with greater ease.

“After 11 treatments, my shoulder was back to 90% capacity… After another month of daily movement, the pain was completely gone and I was fully recovered with 100% range of motion.”  – D.H.

A Provider’s Perspective: The neoGEN® System in Frozen Shoulder Recovery

(Testimonial from a provider who was not involved in D.H.’s case but has experience treating frozen shoulder with the neoGEN® System.)

“I have had several patients that I have been able to successfully release them from their frozen shoulder issues. I had a woman in her 50s that was unable to use her shoulder for lifting groceries or any other activity that requires lifting. When shopping, she would have to recruit the help of her daughter to help bring in the groceries due to her frozen shoulder.

After 9 treatments, the patient requested a follow up with me to review her results. Upon examination, the patient was so happy that she was in tears of joy. “This is the first time that I’ve been able to use my shoulder in 15 years! Thank you so much” The patient then proceeded to do windmill circles with both arms like she never had a problem at all.

If the patient does not get better with treatment, the patient would then need surgical intervention. This treatment needs to be top of mind with all providers so that patients are not suffering needlessly. All we need to do is identify patients and get them treatment in order to improve their functionality.”

How the neoGEN® System Supports Frozen Shoulder Recovery

While not a standalone cure, the neoGEN® System plays a significant role in enhancing recovery through several FDA-cleared indications, including:

  • Pain reduction
  • Increased local blood circulation
  • Relaxation of muscle spasms
  • Improved joint mobility

Frozen Shoulder is a debilitating condition, but advancements like the neoGEN® System provide new hope for recovery. Patients like D.H. have found relief through tailored treatment sessions, while providers continue to recognize the system’s potential in musculoskeletal rehabilitation.

By integrating this therapy into a broader rehabilitation strategy, patients can experience faster relief and improved function without relying solely on medications or invasive procedures.

If you’re struggling with frozen shoulder, consult with a healthcare provider to explore whether the neoGEN® System may be right for you.
